Thousands displaced in Zamfara, as suspected bandits chase women, children out of their homes

In Zamfara State, over 12,000 persons have reportedly been displaced by rampaging bandits.

Villages in three districts under Zurmi emirate, Zurmi local government area – including Birane, kwashabawa, and Mashema –  are said to be under the control of these bandits.

People have begun fleeing their homes with no help in sight from the government.

The speaker of the state House of Assembly, Sanusi Garba Rikiji, said on his visit to the camp on Saturday that some of the displaced persons died while running from their communities to Zurmi LGA, while some pregnant women delivered new babies while trekking to same area.

He said some new born babies have been washed with gutter water.

“We have directed the state commissioner of education to close all the schools in this area so that to accommodate these displaced people,” he said.

All the villages of the displaced persons were said to have been burnt down, with their properties, including money, burnt to ashes.

Locals say the government has turned a blind eye to their plights.
