The Simple Explanation of MTN and The Attorney General Tax Saga as explained by Tokunbo a frustrated tenant
So during the week, the attorney general of the federation Abubakar Malami notified MTN that his office made what claimed “a high-level calculation” that MTN Nigeria should have paid approximately $2billion in taxes relating to the importation of foreign equipment and payments to foreign suppliers over the last 10 years and he requested MTN Nigeria to do a self-assessment of the taxes in this regard that have been actually paid.

Ok let’s forget about the official explanations. In a nutshell, the Attorney general feels that the government was getting less than what they should be getting from MTN through tax.

It’s just like the bus conductor asking you to pay more money after you have agreed on a certain price for your journey, which you paid, only for him to come again half way through the journey and ask you to pay more because he suddenly feels the distance covered should have attracted more money than you paid.

We have tried to break the whole saga down for you using the example of a frustrated tenant(Tokunbo) and his landlord so you can fully understand what exactly is going on.
So, when Tokunbo first came to Lagos, he was looking for an apartment to rent, an apartment close to the nice job he just got.
After much wahala, he finally got a nice place and he went to see the landlord, so they can negotiate the rent.
As a guy that doesn’t want wahala now, Tokunbo went with an apartment valuer to negotiate for him so he knows how much he is supposed to pay per annum for the apartment.

Low and behold brethren, Tokunbo rented the apartment and started living in it. He even renovated some parts of the house just to make it better

Tokunbo started buying new things like air conditioning, tv set and he even bought a new car in 10 months of living in baba landlords house
Then trouble started, baba landlord came suddenly one morning and told Tokunbo to pay more money because the initial agreement can no longer work

How now? Tokunbo asked baba landlord, then baba landlord started doing some ghen ghen calculations; said Tokunbo has bought a lot of things, renovated the house and his car and AC is occupying space yen yen yen

Anyways the thing has caused big issue between Tokunbo and baba landlord oo even the whole neighbourhood now knows about the issue and Tokunbo is not even having it at all neither is baba landlord

Do you think baba landlord was been fair by asking Tokunbo to pay more money? Share your thoughts and let’s help Tokunbo and Baba landlord settle their differences amicably.
