Texas Lawmaker Al Green to File Impeachment Articles Over Trump’s Gaza Plan
Political tensions, U.S. Representative Al Green (D-TX) has announced plans to file articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump following his controversial remarks about taking control of Gaza.
Trump, speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a joint press conference on Tuesday, declared his intention for the United States to “take over Gaza” to “dismantle and develop it.” He described the region as a “hellhole,” sparking outrage among critics.
Green swiftly condemned the remarks, calling Trump’s proposal a “dastardly deed” and accusing the former president of endorsing “ethnic cleansing in Gaza.” The Texas lawmaker also criticized Netanyahu for standing by as Trump made the remarks.
“The prime minister of Israel should be ashamed, knowing the history of his people, to stand there and allow such things to be said,” Green stated.
Citing civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Green argued that injustice in Gaza directly impacts justice in the U.S. and vowed to lead a grassroots movement to hold Trump accountable.
“The movement to impeach the president has begun,” Green declared. “I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”
Green has previously led unsuccessful impeachment efforts against Trump during his first term, and his latest attempt is unlikely to gain significant traction. Impeachment is not currently a priority for Democratic leadership, but Green insists that public pressure could change that.
“This impeachment movement is going to be a grass-up movement, not a top-down one,” he said. “When the people demand it, it will be done.”
