TCN Slams BEDC Over “Inaccurate” Power Supply Claims

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) that recent power supply disruptions were caused by its maintenance activities.

BEDC, in a public statement on Saturday, apologized to its customers for failing to meet the minimum service level of 20 hours on several feeders, including Abraka Commercial, Industrial Commercial, Ughelli/Shell, and Sapele. The company attributed power shortfalls—ranging between 5.2 and 6 hours—to maintenance work allegedly carried out by TCN.

However, TCN has categorically denied responsibility for the disruptions, calling BEDC’s claims misleading.

In an official statement released on March 14, TCN clarified that the only scheduled maintenance was on March 11 at the Amukpe transmission station, and the bulk power supply was fully restored on the same day.

“For clarification purposes, TCN only applied for a planned outage on March 11, 2025, at the Amukpe Transmission Station, which was completed on the same day and bulk power supply restored,” the company stated.

TCN further stressed that BEDC’s claims were unfounded, emphasizing that its maintenance activities had no connection to customers’ power shortages.

The transmission company did, however, acknowledge an issue with the Ughelli/Shell 33-kilovolt (kV) feeder T1 60 megavolt-ampere (MVA), which tripped due to a fault on March 14. Efforts, it assured, were already underway to restore supply to the affected areas.

But for the other affected locations BEDC mentioned, TCN pointed the finger right back at the distribution company, stating that the outages were due to faults on BEDC’s own 33kV feeders—not TCN’s operations.

“TCN urges BEDC to please provide accurate information to its customers, stating facts as they are, for the benefit of all stakeholders,” the company stated, underscoring its commitment to reliable power transmission across the country.
