Suspected assassins break into Deputy Senate President, Ekweremadu’s home in Abuja

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has escaped an assassination attempt early Tuesday morning, according to his media aide.

Ekweremadu’s media spokesperson, Uche Anichukwu said armed gunmen made their way past the security at his Abuja home and held the family hostage.

The suspects, Anichukwu says, held the Senator’s son and asked for his whereabouts. They subsequently made their way into his bedroom, but were arrested.

“It was at the senator’s bedroom that a struggle ensued, leading to the arrest of one of the assailants with dangerous weapons and housebreaking devices, while the rest managed to escape,” the aide said in a statement.

“The arrested member of the gang has, however, refused to divulge any information on the operation and has been handed over to the police.

“Ekweremadu, his wife, and one of his sons were in the house at the time of the attack.”

The aide further said a similar attack on the Senator sometime in November 2015 was yet to be properly investigated.
