Social media is a ‘terrorist organisation’ – Sultan of Sokoto Declares

Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III has likened social media to a “terrorist organisation,” urging security agencies to take action against what he described as a growing threat to national stability.

The comment was made during the seventh executive committee meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held in Maiduguri on Tuesday. Addressing the mounting challenges facing Nigeria, the Sultan voiced concern over the role of misinformation in exacerbating the country’s already fragile security landscape.

“Social media is a terrorist organisation,” he declared. “Somebody will sit in their comfort zone and formulate stories, and you will think that it is true. That’s one terrorist organisation… social media. Social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with.”

He further urged security agencies to take decisive steps to curb the spread of fake news and harmful content on digital platforms.

The Sultan’s remarks come in the wake of renewed violence in Plateau State and other regions. He described the situation as deeply troubling and called for immediate and coordinated responses to prevent further bloodshed.

“So, we are not happy with what is happening either on the Plateau or other places,” he added, highlighting the urgency of addressing the crisis.

On Monday, Amnesty International reported that the death toll from the most recent attacks in Plateau had climbed to 54. The human rights organisation also stated that hundreds of residents have been displaced and are living in constant fear of fresh attacks.
