Stephen Keshi: No fanfare as former Super Eagles coach is buried

His interment was preceded by a requiem mass on Friday.

Former Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, has been buried.

He was laid to rest, Friday, in his home town of Illah, Delta.

His interment was preceded by a requiem mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

A novelty match graced by his former teammates was played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, shortly after a requiem mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Benin City, on Thursday.

It was however far away from the state funeral the Nigerian government promised.

A teammate of Keshi, Austin Eguavoen, was disappointed by the federal government’s handling of the event.

“I am not shocked by the way the government has treated this event.

“For instance, most of us have yet to get the houses the government promised us when we won the Nations Cup in 1994.

“You are only energised when you have been looked after.

“You now wonder if Nigeria is worth fighting for or even dying for,” he said.

Keshi’s son was also disappointed.

“The federal government did not deliver on the promises they made to us as regards our father’s burial,” he said.

Keshi died following a cardiac arrest on June 8, 2016.

A former Super Eagles captain and coach, he was the second person to win the African Nations Cup both as a player and as a coach..
