South Korea’s ex-President also sentenced to jail over corrupt practices
Another ex-president is going to jail for being corrupt. It is South Korea’s former president, Park Geun-hye.
Geun-hye will serve 24 years in jail after being found guilty on multiple counts of abuse of power, bribery and coercion.
The former president had been embroiled in a corruption scandal which implicated some powerful persons in the country.
She was found guilty of 16 of the 18 charges she faced, related to a massive influence-peddling case that removed her from office last year.
Prosecutors actually wanted her to serve 30 years in jail.
“The President abused the power which was given to her by the citizens,” the judge said, adding a tough sentence was needed to send a firm message to the country’s future leaders.
Geun-hye was also fined $17 million as part of the sentence.
In a related case, Brazil’s ex-president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, will also begin a 12-year jail sentence on Friday (today).
