Somalia: Christians are exempted from Christmas ban

Non-Muslims living in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, are exempted from the ban on Christmas celebrations, a government official has said.
“Non-Muslims are free to celebrate. We are not after them,” mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimale told the BBC.

He added that the ban applied to Muslims, and was introduced to prevent possible attacks by militant Islamist group al-Shabab on people who may gather at hotels or other public places.
