Several soldiers, farmers killed in fresh attacks by Boko Haram
Boko Haram has gone on complete rampage even as reports of the group being decimated keep popping up in discussions across the country.
Over the course of three days, the terrorist group launched unprecedented attacks in which not fewer than 44 soldiers were reportedly killed in Metele, a remote village in Borno near the Nigerian border with Niger.
The attack is said to have been conducted by the Islamic State of West Africa Province, the splintered arm of Boko Haram.
According to military sources, the insolent terrorists overwhelmed the soldiers on Sunday, killing the unit commander and several other troops just a week after the Defence Headquarters had announced delivery of sophisticated weapons to help get rid of the stubborn insurgents.
On Monday, it went on food hunt where nine farmers were killed and about twelve others abducted to be forced into fighting for the sect or married off to the fighters.
Ever since Boko Haram resumed its campaign in July, it’s been reported that hundreds of soldiers have been killed, with a record number of troops missing. These attacks have introduced a new dynamics to the fight against terrorism in Northeast Nigeria.
The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Burutai has charged the soldiers to be undeterred by the “recent sporadic skirmishes from the Boko Haram”, dismissing the attacks as “the last kicks of a dying horse.”
