Suspected Boko Haram spy arrested over Borno terrorist attack
Security operatives have arrested a man suspected of spying for Boko Haram in Monguno LGA of Borno state over his alleged involvement in the recent terrorist attack on Cross Kauwa.
According to sources quoted by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the suspect, identified as Abulfatahi, was arrested on July 27 during an intelligence-led operation aimed at dismantling a terrorist intelligence network operating in the area.
“Sources disclosed that two other members of the same network had earlier been arrested and transferred to the Joint Intelligence Fusion Centre (JIFC) for further investigation,” Makama said.
“During preliminary interrogation, Abulfatahi reportedly confessed to working for a Boko Haram commander identified as Akilu, who is said to control terrorist activities in Dabar Masara and Garin Mace.
“According to the sources, the suspect admitted to collecting taxes on behalf of the terrorist leader and facilitating the selection of individuals for abduction around Monguno.
“Investigators also recovered two telephone numbers allegedly linked to Akilu from the suspect’s mobile phone as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the terrorist network.”
The sources said security agencies are continuing investigations to uncover other members of the network, determine the scope of its activities, and strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism efforts across the Lake Chad region.
The publication added that a detailed investigation report will be prepared after the inquiry has been concluded.
