Senate Rejects Motion to Immortalize Humphrey Nwosu, Former NEC Chairman
The Nigerian Senate has voted against a motion to honour the late Humphrey Nwosu, former chairman of the now-defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), by naming the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja after him.
The proposal, put forward by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), was introduced on Wednesday and extensively debated on Thursday. However, it failed to garner enough support from lawmakers.
Abaribe passionately argued that Nwosu, who oversaw the controversial and annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and deserved national recognition.
However, opposition to the motion was firm. Senator Cyril Fasuyi (Ekiti North) dismissed the proposal outright, asserting that Nwosu’s contributions were insufficient for such an honour.
“Nobody rewards efforts; what we reward is results. Humphrey Nwosu only made efforts,” Fasuyi stated, reinforcing his stance that the late electoral chief had not left a lasting enough impact to merit the renaming of INEC’s headquarters.
