Senate confirms new NCos CG barely 24 hours after Kogi jailbreak
The Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the new Comptroller-General (CG) of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The confirmation followed a report presented by the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North. Oshiomhole moved the motion for Nwakuche’s approval during Tuesday’s plenary session, with Senator Titus Zam of Benue North-West seconding the motion.
During the presentation of the committee’s findings, Oshiomhole emphasized that Nwakuche underwent a rigorous screening process on March 12 and was found to be highly qualified for the role.
“The committee found the nominee to possess impeccable character, vast exposure, significant experience, sharp intellect, and an unwavering drive,” Oshiomhole stated. “Beyond academic qualifications, he has held multiple command positions and benefited from extensive training and retraining.”
Oshiomhole further noted that there were no petitions or incriminating reports against Nwakuche, reinforcing his suitability for the position.
With no opposition from any senator, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the nomination to a voice vote, receiving unanimous approval.
In his remarks, Akpabio expressed confidence that Nwakuche’s appointment would strengthen the nation’s correctional system, particularly in addressing recent security challenges.
“I hope that this confirmation by the Senate will inspire him to serve Nigeria with renewed dedication,” Akpabio stated. “He is stepping into this role at a critical time, with increasing jail breaks nationwide. As the saying goes, to whom much is given, much is expected.”
