Vice Admiral Ibas promises to restore peace in Rivers
In the wake of a deepening political crisis in Rivers State, newly sworn-in sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has vowed to restore peace and stability by working closely with all stakeholders.
Ibas, a retired vice admiral, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. The move also saw the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the state legislature.
Rivers State has been at the centre of an intense political power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike—now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The battle for control over the state’s political structure has led to a prolonged standoff, prompting federal intervention.
Speaking shortly after his swearing-in at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Ibas emphasized that his primary mission is to restore normalcy in the state.
“Mr. President made it very clear in his broadcast that the main issue is maintaining law and order in the state,” Ibas stated. “For any meaningful progress to take place, I will work with all stakeholders to bring peace, security, and stability to the people and government of Rivers State.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has delayed its decision on approving the state of emergency declaration. A heated debate in the chamber on Wednesday forced lawmakers to push the discussion to Thursday.
