Some desperate rice smugglers have hacked a Customs officer to death in Ogun and injured another.
The smugglers were said to have attacked Customs operatives who were in the Asero neighbourhood in Abeokuta to secure eight ‘reconstructed’ vehicles which had been intercepted for carrying smuggled rice.
Hamisu Sani was hacked to death with a machete in an ambush by the smugglers, while Tijani Michael narrowly escaped with injuries.
The NCS spokesperson in Ogun, Abdullahi Maiwada said on Monday that Tijani was recovering from his injuries at a hospital. Sani, he said, had been buried according to his Islamic faith.
Maiwada added that two suspects have been arrested by police in connection with the incident and the eight vehicles secured.
