REVEALED: Name, department of professor killed by “child” terrorist in University of Maiduguri

Four people were killed, and 17 others injured after two suicide bombers attacked the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) on Monday, officials say.

Professor Aliyu Mani of the Department of Veterinary Medicine is reportedly among those killed. It was earlier reported that five people died in the attack.

One of the suicide bombers, reported to be a seven-year-old boy, detonated his vest bomb inside the varsity’s junior staff mosque. Witnesses say Mani was inside the building when the explosion occurred.

The second bomber was a girl of about 12 years old, police say.

“At about 5:15am of today (Monday), a police mobile force personnel on duty near Gate 4 at the back of University of Maiduguri, gunned down a female suicide bomber of about 12 years old,” Borno State police spokesperson Victor Isuku said in a statement.

“(The girl) was trying to infiltrate the university premised, and the IED strapped to her body exploded killing her instantly.

“Shortly after that, a second explosion occurred in a mosque inside the university. Four persons including a professor and the second suicide bomber died, while 15 persons sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to UMTH (the varsity’s teaching hospital)”, he said.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also confirmed the number of deaths but added that 17 people, not the 15 reported by the police, were injured.

“One of the suicide bombers detonated his explosion at a Mosque near Gate 1 when people were observing their early morning prayer, the second one occurred around Gate 5 of the University.

“Rescue and security officials were at scene and seventeen injured victims were evacuated to hospital.
