Reps probe $4.6 Billion global fund grants for HIV, Tuberclosis, and Malaria

A house of representatives committee has commenced a probe into the utilisation of the $1.8 billion and $2.8 billion Nigeria received as grants from the Global Fund and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) between 2021 and 2025.

The funds were provided to support the country’s response to HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s public health systems.

Speaking at the committee’s inaugural investigative hearing on Monday, Chairman Amobi Ogah expressed concern over the persistent impact of infectious diseases despite the large sums committed to combating them.

“Nigeria continues to be battered by the heavy burden of infectious diseases,” Ogah said. “It appears that even with budgetary allocations and substantial donor funding, there is no visible improvement, as Nigerians are still being ravaged daily.”

The committee is expected to scrutinize how the funds were utilized and determine whether they have translated into tangible improvements in Nigeria’s health outcomes.
