Reps Deputy Chief Whip Adewunmi Onanuga dies after brief illness
The House of Representatives has announced the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the deputy chief whip, following a brief illness. Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the lower legislative chamber, confirmed the development in a statement released on Wednesday night.
Onanuga, fondly known as “Ijaya,” represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform. She passed away on Wednesday, leaving behind a legacy of impactful service and dedication to her constituents.
“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga,” Rotimi said in the statement seen by Neusroom.
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga’s political journey began with her election to the House in 2019. She served as the chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly.
Reelected in 2023, she was appointed deputy chief whip of the 10th Assembly, further solidifying her position as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Rotimi described Onanuga as a dedicated lawmaker admired for her intellect, passion, humility, and drive for excellence. “Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her passion for creating a better society and her tireless dedication to public service,” he noted.
The statement also extended condolences to her family, friends, associates, the government and people of Ogun State—particularly her constituents—and the entire National Assembly.
“As we mourn the loss of this vibrant and committed lawmaker, whose life was devoted to improving the lives of Nigerians, her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations,” Rotimi added.
Onanuga’s death marks the fourth loss of a member in the 10th Assembly, underscoring a challenging period for the Green Chamber. Her contributions to governance and her commitment to the development of her constituency will remain a source of inspiration.
