Reports that officers training to fight Boko Haram have fled are false – Police

The Nigeria Police Force has debunked reports that almost 200 of its operatives have fled the training base in Buni Yadi, Yobe State.

A report by Premium Times had earlier claimed that the policemen who are part of a group of 2000 officers being trained to assist the military in combating Boko Haram terrorists in North East have taken to their heels.

Police says there is no truth in the report.

“The 2000 Police personnel deployed are in high morale and high spirit in the operation. No Police personnel absconded as alleged in the report,” Force spokesperson Jimoh Moshood said in a statement Wednesday evening.

“The Force wishes to categorically state that the story is untrue, absolute falsehood and a deliberate attempt to cast aspersions on the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force in the ongoing fight against the Boko Haram insurgency.”

Moshood said the Force had carried out investigation into the report and nothing of such happened.

He said the officers “have been engaged actively in the front line along with the Military in the fight against Boko Haram terrorist group since the inception of the insurgency.”

“The list of 167 names attached to the story is fake as the Officers mentioned are on ground in the North East.

He added that the report was misleading and based on hearsay “from misguided individuals who are being used to work against national interest and security.”

Soldiers on the battle front had been complaining about lack of provision of sophisticated arms and less than encouraging welfare.
