Relive Some Of The Greatest Sports Moments On Supersports This Weekend

With the current shortage in live-action, SuperSport has converted its channels to themed offerings focusing on the best historical sporting moments and fascinating documentaries which will fuel your passion as we await the return of our heroes to fields, tracks and rings around the world.

SuperSport 1 is the feature channel for reliving some of the greatest events in sport, and the weekend of 1-3 May 2020 promises to be a cracker for DStv and GOtv viewers.

The month of May opens on Friday and SuperSport 1 is headlined by a closer look at the history of the European Championships, with 12 back-to-back episodes of UEFA Euro Official story (from 07:30am to 7:30pm), chronicling the early years of the tournament in the 1960s, all the way up to Spain’s triumph in 2008 which signalled the start of a sustained period of dominance for ‘La Furia Roja’.

“We have put together a group that plays well, that keeps the ball and mixes their passes very well and that is difficult to stop. We work hard together, those that play more and those that play slightly less, and we’ve managed to get there. This is a happy day for Spain – we’ve won this tournament in style and we’re very happy. Now we will start expecting to win on this sort of stage,” said Spain coach Luis Aragones upon his team’s victory over Germany in 2008 final in Vienna.

Saturday 2 May opens up with a focus on boxing, featuring a look back at Mike Tyson’s rise to the top of the heavyweight division (10:50am to 12:20pm), some of Sonny Liston’s top bouts (12:20pm), and the late South African great Corrie Sanders taking on Michael Sprott at Carnival City back in 2001 (12:50pm).

Football fans can ReLive the UEFA Euro 2012 final between Spain and Italy from 1:00pm, before the documentary series 30 for 30 takes centre stage in the late afternoon and early evening: ‘Guru of Go’ at 4:00pm profiles Paul Westhead, who won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers before being run out of town due to Magic Johnson; ‘Four Days in October’ at 5:00pm looks at the Boston Red Sox finally ending ‘The Curse’ to defeat the New York Yankees and win the World Series; and ‘Trojan War’ at 6:00pm chronicles the University of Southern California basketball team’s rise and fall.

“I arrived at USC at the same time coach Pete Carroll did. What I remember is an electric atmosphere, an expectation that exciting things could happen at any moment, on the field as well as the sideline. It was entertaining. It was exhilarating. It was the Hollywood Dream,” said ‘Trojan War’ director Aaron Rahsaan Thomas.

Sunday 3 May on SuperSport 1 is headlined by the chance to ReLive the 2018 World Cup final between France and Croatia (1:05pm), as well as the fascinating documentary ‘Best All by Himself’ (4:00pm) which delves deeper into the dramatic life and times of football legend George Best.

“I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered,” is one of Best’s most famous quote, and perfectly apt for a man who was dubbed ‘The Fifth Beatle’ during the peak of his career in the 1960s.

For golf fans, there are also the highlights of the 2012 Open Championship (6:00pm), in which South African great Ernie Els won his second Claret Jug, one stroke ahead of runner-up Adam Scott. Tiger Woods and Brandt Snedeker finished tied for third, four strokes behind Els, who gained his fourth major title.
