Religious leaders call to intercede on behalf of corrupt persons – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said he gets numerous calls from the elite anytime there is an attempt to sack a corrupt public official.

Osinbajo, during the 24th Nigerian Economic Summit plenary on corruption and rule of law in Abuja, on Monday, mentioned that such intervention often comes from religious leaders.

He responded to a question by Ngaire Woods, the founding dean of Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University, on who the saboteurs of justice were.

“I would like to refer to the Nigerian elite, and it’s probably not fair to be that broad, but practically, every segment, because people who have access to you, they could be political leaders, religious leaders, business leaders, whoever has access to you,” he said.

“We have a system where people just feel like, ‘why don’t you just give this guy a break?’ Which again is part of the problem. You don’t get one call, you get several calls.”

The VP also lamented the slow pace of judgement in corruption cases at law courts, but expressed optimism that the conviction of two former governors was proof that the law eventually takes its course.
