Raymond Dokpesi, the founder of DAAR Communications Limited, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM, has died. He was 71.

A statement by the family said: “the sad incident occurred on Monday, May 29, at about 2:30pm, at an Abuja hospital where he was admitted after taking ill.”

Dokpesi, a business mogul, founded Nigeria’s first private FM radio station in 1994 and Africa Independent Television (AIT) following the deregulation of the broadcast media sector in Nigeria by the Ibrahim Babangida military regime.

Dokpesi started his career in the transport sector where he worked in the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Ministry of Transport, and later established his shipping company African Ocean Lines, one of Africa’s first indigenous shipping lines.
