President Tinubu Urges Governors, Ministers to Prioritize Nigeria’s Most Vulnerable
President Bola Tinubu has called on governors and members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to focus their efforts on policies that directly uplift Nigeria’s poor and vulnerable.
Speaking at an Iftar dinner on Monday night at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu hosted governors, FEC members, service chiefs, and top government officials for the Ramadan fast-breaking event. The president emphasized the importance of selfless leadership, urging government officials to see themselves as navigators steering Nigeria toward prosperity.
“I thank you all for responding to this invitation. You honored it out of respect, not because you lack food to eat or share,” Tinubu remarked. “In our first FEC meeting, I said we were going to work hard to fetch water from a dry well. We are still working to ensure there is water to drink and that we spend money, not the people.”
The president assured attendees that his administration’s people-centered policies are beginning to yield positive results. He credited the success of ongoing economic reforms to the collective efforts of the FEC and the commitment of state leaders.
Using a powerful analogy, Tinubu likened Nigeria to a large family living in different rooms within the same house. He urged leaders to embrace unity and a shared vision for national progress.
Kwara State Governor and Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, praised Tinubu’s leadership, describing his economic reforms as “bold and decisive.”
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, who led Christian prayers at the gathering, highlighted the symbolic significance of both Muslims and Christians fasting at the same time, calling it a divine coincidence that reinforces national unity.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, echoed the sentiments of progress, noting that economic reforms are already impacting livelihoods. “The prices of goods and foodstuffs are steadily dropping,” he stated, commending the president for his courage in implementing tough but necessary policies.
Tinubu urged leaders to redouble their efforts to deliver meaningful development. “Standing here as president is a great honor, and you can’t trade it. Continue doing what you are doing. And do more for the people,” he said.
