Police have summoned Senator Dino Melaye, Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce for questioning over the commotion at the Force headquarters in Abuja on Friday.

Some PDP bigwigs, led by Saraki, had besieged the headquarters to demand that INEC ensures free and fair election in the country. They also called on the electoral body to declare Senator Ademola Adeleke winner of the Osun State governorship election which held in September.

There was commotion during the protest and police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.

The police have now accused Saraki, Melaye and Murray-Bruce of causing public unrest by blocking motorists and other members of the public from having access to a major highway for several hours. They also accused the lawmakers of attacking their personnel unprovoked.

Police say the lawmakers are to report themselves for questioning and investigation at the Force headquarters on Monday, October 8.

“The Inspector General of Police had directed investigation into this unprovoked and unwarranted attack on the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Force headquarters which is against the law and condemnable.

“The Force will do anything within the law to bring all perpetrators of this crime to justice, no matter how highly placed,” the police said in a statement.

It is not the first time the police would invite Saraki and Melaye for questioning for various allegations.
