“Police must fly shot FUNAAB student abroad, sponsor his education” – SUG demands

The Nigeria Police Force must now take full responsibility for the education of a student an officer allegedly shot in the head, colleagues of the hospitalized 25-year-old are demanding.

Police deny shooting Abisoye Taiwo, a student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), saying he was injured by a stone thrown by another student. The students were, on August 18, protesting against growing insecurity around campus.

Taiwo is still in intense at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. A special adviser to the President Muhammadu Buhari will be meeting with student union leaders on Thursday, NewsroomNG understands.

Ahead of the meeting, the union have made a list of demands.

The press release, signed by all the executives was published through the Union’s General Secretary, Oyekunle Habeeb. It reads in part:

“The students use this medium to communicate officially regarding steps we have taken so far, when we visited Mr. Taiwo at UCH. His brother told us that they are not interested in any case with the Nigerian Police Force. But in a bid not to make Taiwo suffer in vain, we have given the commissioner of police a week ultimatum to meet up with these demands:

Retraction of the police statement that no students was shot and no live ammunition was fired;

The police should immediately fly the shot student abroad for proper medical treatment;

The police should immediately compensate the family of the victim;

The students gave the police one week, beginning Thursday, to meet the demands.

FUNAAB remain shut after the school announced a seven-day break to restore peace.
