Police arrest 14 ‘scapegoats’ trading in Naira notes in Kwara

The police seem to be making good on its pledge to stop Nigerians from “abusing” Naira notes through various means.

Fourteen suspects have been arrested in Kwara for allegedly trading in the currency.

Police authorities say the suspects were apprehended in various locations in Ilorin on Saturday.

The Force spokesperson, Ajayi Okesanmi, while parading the suspects said the police “acted on actionable intelligence that some individuals and groups of people were trading in naira notes issued by the CBN.”

He added that the activity was contrary to a CBN Act which clearly states that trading in the currency is a punishable offence.

Okesanmi added that huge sums of money in various denominations were recovered from the suspects and they would be charged to court after investigation.

“The Nigeria Police and the CBN will continue to clamp down on the perpetrators of this offence, which is punishable by law,” he said.

“The general public is warned that spraying naira notes at parties, soiling, writing on the naira, squeezing and all other abuse of the Nigerian currency constitute an offence.”

One of the suspects, Adebayo Kazeem, was arrested while selling different denominations of naira notes at social events. Kazeem, an apprentice, claimed he was unaware the act was unlawful.
