Plateau State locked down after “herdsmen” murder monarch, police, driver

Police said three people were killed in the attack, and one injured. Residents disagree.
State police spokesperson Tyopev Terna said that no arrest has been made in connection to the killing.

The Saf Ron Kulere, Sir Lazarus Agai, was allegedly murdered while returning from his farm in Sha, Plateau State.

But it appears the government is not interested in bringing his killers to book.

Instead of launching a manhunt for the monarch’s killers, who are suspected to be herdsmen, the government instead only imposed a curfew to prevent reprisal attacks.

“The incidence took place at about 3pm yesterday (Monday) while the chief was on transit from a neighbouring village,” a statement by Governor Simon Lalong’s media aide said.

“The governor has therefore summoned an emergency meeting of security agencies tomorrow (Tuesday) so as to come up with strategies to prevent reprisals from aggrieved groups.

“To avert any breakdown of law and order, the government has decided to impose a curfew on the area.”

Agai was a first class traditional ruler. He was also chairman of Bokkos Traditional Council.

The monarch’s driver and a police orderly were also killed when suspected herdsmen opened fire on Agai in broad day light.

While the imposition of a curfew on Bokko to prevent reprisal attacks should be applauded, many say bringing the monarch’s killers to justice is the surest way to lasting peace.

Some say the killing may even be political as former state governor Joshua Dariye is also from Bokko..
