27 killed in fresh Plateau attack

At least 27 farmers, including men and women, were killed on Monday when gunmen launched a violent assault on Bindi-Jebbu, a village in the Tahoss community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The assailants reportedly stormed the community in the early hours, opening fire indiscriminately and setting several houses ablaze in what residents described as a brutal and unprovoked attack.

“About 27 people were killed, and many were injured. We have taken the bodies to different hospitals pending burial arrangements,” said Dalyop Solomon, National President of Berom Youth Moulders (BYM).

Solomon accused Fulani militia groups of being responsible for the attack, citing the pattern of violence that has plagued the region in recent years.

The victims who sustained injuries were rushed to nearby health facilities, including Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and Plateau Hospital, for emergency medical attention.

According to Solomon, “About 27 persons were killed and many were injured,” emphasising the scale of devastation in the farming community, which is still grappling with shock and grief.

“The gunmen stormed the community on Monday, shooting indiscriminately and setting houses ablaze,” he added.

The Plateau State Police Command has acknowledged the incident but said more information would be released in due course. In a phone call with TheCable, police spokesperson Alfred Alabo said, “The security agency will release a comprehensive statement about the incident very soon.”

Monday’s attack adds to the growing list of security challenges facing rural communities across Plateau State, where farmers have increasingly become targets of violent raids, raising fresh concerns over government response and the safety of lives in remote villages.
