Philando Castile: US police kill another black man, handcuff his girlfriend “to sort things out”

As protests continued over the police killing of a black man in Louisiana, another black man has been shot dead by police in the US state of Minnesota.

Police then handcuffed his girlfriend who filmed the aftermath of the shooting.

Philando Castile had been stopped by a police officer in Falcon Heights, a suburb of St Paul, because the car had a broken rear light, his girlfriend Lavish Reynolds said.

When the officer asked Castile to produce his driver’s licence, Reynolds said he informed the officer he was lawfully carrying a gun. He then reached into his pocket for the licence only to be shot.

Reynolds live-streamed the aftermath of the shooting.

“You shot four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his license and registration, sir,” the woman said in the video.

In the video, the officer was heard swearing in apparent regret after shooting Castile.

The officer, who appeared to panic after shooting Castile, shouted:

“Fuck! I told him not to reach for it. I told him to get his hands off it!”

All the while, he pointed the gun at the man who was still alive…bleeding.

Moments later, 32-year-old Castile stopped moving. His mother told CBSNews he died at Hennepin County Medical Center on Wednesday night.

When other police officers reached the scene, they pointed their guns at Reynolds ordering her to get out of the car. She obeyed them. They ordered her to get on her knees. She did. They then handcuffed her.

“Am I being arrested?” she asked.

“No ma’am you’re just being detained till we get all this sorted, okay?” a police officer replied.

Castile worked as a cafeteria supervisor at a Montessori school. The world his receiving news of his killing with anger.

Philando Castile’s fatal shooting came hours after two police officers pinned and killed Alton Sterling, 32, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Responding to Castile’s killing, police authorities said an investigation was under way and the officer involved has been put on leave.

St. Anthony Police said in a news release that officers pulled over a vehicle at about 9 p.m. They said “shots were fired” during the traffic stop, and a handgun was recovered at the scene, CBSNews reported.
