FG holds crucial meeting with Labour leaders over petrol price increase

The Federal Government has held a crucial meeting with leaders of the Organised Labour over the increase in petrol prices across the country.

The high-powered meeting was held at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

The Federal Government delegation was led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, while the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, Trade Union Congress (TUC) Secretary General Nuhu Toro, led the Organised Labour contingent.

Also in attendance were the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu.

Though the agenda of the meeting is being kept under wraps, the organised labour has been aggrieved about the recent increase in the pump price of petrol, hike in electricity tariff, ballooning inflation, and high cost of living in the country.

NNPCL jacks up petrol price, again

The meeting came a week after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) adjusted the pump price of petrol at its retail outlets in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

NPPCL outlets across Lagos pegged the litre of the essential commodity for ₦998, about ₦150 higher than the initial price of ₦855.

The situation is similar in Abuja where the national oil company has now hiked petrol prices from ₦897 to ₦1,030.

The latest increase is the second in less than one month as the NNPCL had on September 2, 2024, hiked the price per litre of petrol from ₦568 to ₦855, sparking outrage.

The pump price of petrol per litre was raised from ₦184 to ₦568 last June after President Bola Tinubu declared during his inaugural speech that ”subsidy is gone.”
