Peter Obi Meets PDP Governors’ Forum Chair, Sparks 2027 Election Speculation
Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, held a high-profile meeting with Bala Mohammed, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, on Thursday.
The closed-door meeting took place at Ramat House in Bauchi State, fueling rumors of potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. While details of their discussion remain undisclosed, Mohammed, who also serves as the governor of Bauchi State, is expected to address journalists alongside Obi afterward.
Their meeting comes amid increasing talks of a possible opposition coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. Obi, a former Anambra State governor, left the PDP in 2022 over internal party disagreements before contesting the presidency under the LP banner. He finished third in the election, securing over six million votes and garnering strong support, particularly among young Nigerians.
With opposition parties exploring alliances, PDP’s acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, stated in June 2024 that the party is eager to welcome Obi back. While Obi has yet to confirm any move, he has expressed openness to a coalition—provided it prioritizes governance over mere political power.
Adding to the intrigue, Daniel Bwala, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on media and policy, claimed on Wednesday that Obi is poised to leave the LP and join the APC ahead of the 2027 elections. Obi has not publicly responded to the claim.
