“The PDP is not collapsing” Senate caucus insists party must lead coalition ahead of 2027

The Senate caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that the party must lead any coalition formed ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a high-level meeting in Abuja, Minority Leader of the Senate and Chairman of the PDP Senate Caucus, Senator Abba Moro, emphasized that the PDP is best positioned to anchor a broad-based coalition capable of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic governance.

“We are not opposed to coalitions,” Moro said. “Bringing together a synthesis of ideas and forging a harmony of values only adds to the vibrancy of democracy. However, such a coalition must be led by political parties—not individuals—and as the largest opposition party, the PDP’s umbrella is big enough to accommodate all who share in this vision.”

The caucus firmly rejected suggestions that the PDP is weakening, describing internal disputes as a normal feature of democratic politics. Moro compared the PDP’s current challenges to those facing other political parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

“The PDP is not collapsing,” he said. “Conflicts are not unique to our party—they are part of the democratic process and are being faced by all major parties.”

The senators urged party loyalists nationwide to stay committed and resilient, expressing optimism about the party’s future. They also cautioned against actions that could erode Nigeria’s democratic balance.

“Democracy flourishes when there is strong and effective opposition,” Moro noted. “Celebrating the suppression of other parties or drifting towards a one-party state undermines the very essence of democracy.”

Reaffirming the PDP’s relevance, Moro called on members across the country to renew their allegiance to the party’s ideals, saying a revitalised PDP can offer Nigerians a genuine alternative in 2027.

“From the turbulence we are experiencing today, a more united and energised PDP will rise—a party ready to offer real leadership and direction for the nation,” he said.

In a sharp rebuke of political defectors, Moro added that those leaving the PDP for the APC are “sinners” in search of “political forgiveness,” reinforcing the need for loyalty and ideological clarity within party ranks.
