PDP Governors Push for NEC Meeting Reschedule Amid Party Crisis
Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to shift the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to March 13, 2025.
This resolution was announced in a communique issued on Friday after a high-level meeting in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The PDP’s NEC meeting—initially postponed twice in the last three months by the NWC led by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum—was finally rescheduled for February. However, the governors believe a March 13 date would be more suitable, urging the party leadership to take their request into account.
The NEC remains the highest decision-making organ of the PDP, consisting of governors, past and present presidents, vice presidents, principal officers of the National Assembly, state chairmen, members of the NWC, and other key stakeholders. According to Section 31(4) of the PDP constitution, the NEC must meet at least once every three months. The last meeting was held in April 2024.
In their communique, the PDP governors reflected on the state of the nation, highlighting significant socio-economic, security, and infrastructure challenges. They commended their fellow PDP governors for policies aimed at alleviating hardship and laying the groundwork for sustainable development in their respective states.
The governors also acknowledged efforts to resolve the internal crisis surrounding the position of the National Secretary, pledging support for the Court of Appeal’s ruling on the matter. They urged the NWC to swiftly implement the court’s judgment to restore order within the party.
The PDP governors did not hold back in criticizing the federal government’s handling of the economy, calling for an urgent review of macroeconomic policies that have deepened financial hardship for Nigerians.
“No meaningful progress can be made at the state level unless these harsh policies are addressed,” the communique stated.
While commending security agencies for their work, the governors expressed growing concerns over increased attacks and the resurgence of non-state actors.
Despite the prevailing economic and security challenges, the PDP governors urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, promising that the party remains committed to restoring the country’s pre-2015 era of economic stability, security, and national unity.
The communique was signed by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who also serves as the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
