Paediatricians Warn Against Wearing Newborns Okrika (Used Clothes)
Paediatricians warn that wearing newborn babies used clothes popularly called ‘Okrika’ is detrimental to their health.
The Experts listed infestations, skin allergies and infections as some of the health risks invloved.
President of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association, Aminu Mohammad, warned that the immune system of the newborns are vulnerable at their age.
“Newborns have delicate and developing immune systems that make them more susceptible to skin allergies and infections. When parents buy okirika, they may unknowingly expose their babies to severe health risks that could have long-term consequences,” Mohammad.

Mohammad explained that certain chemicals, like formaldehyde, used in making these okrika are harmful to babies.
He said these chemicals could cause dermatitis to these kids, wherein their skins develop allergies to it, thus, causing inflamation of the skin.
“Most second-hand clothes, especially those imported from foreign markets, may have been exposed to substances that are harmful to sensitive skin. These chemicals can trigger reactions such as eczema or worse, making it critical for parents to avoid using them,” he stated.
