Osun govt seals OAU over alleged N1.8bn tax evasion

The Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife has been sealed by the Osun state government for allegedly defaulting on tax payment.

According to the state government, the institution owes N1.8bn in tax. The government had issued a 7-day ultimatum to all affected establishments by the state government.

The school was put under lock and key by officials of the Revenue Task Force early Wednesday morning.

Its Senate Chamber, administrative building, and main gate were sealed.

The team’s leader, Mr Oladipo Babatunde said the money owed by the Institution is outstanding unremitted PAYE withholding taxes and developments levy which had become due and payable since year 2015 and 2016.

The OAU management has said it would resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Its spokesperson, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, told Channels TV that the debt was inherited from the past administration of the institution.

“I must add this that the present university administration since 2017 has been paying consistently but the backlog of debt inherited from the past administration is what is causing this little problem,” he said.
