Masquerade Attacks in Nsukka: Enugu Govt Summons Traditional Rulers, Launches Investigation

The Enugu State Government has initiated a full-scale investigation following a series of violent attacks by Oriokpa masqueraders in Nsukka that resulted in two fatalities.

In a statement, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, confirmed the government’s stance on the issue.

“Following Governor Peter Mbah’s directive, we are summoning traditional rulers and President-Generals of the affected communities to a meeting on Friday,” Ogbodo announced.

He added that a thorough investigation will be led by the state’s Commissioner of Police to ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.

Oriokpa, a popular masquerade in Enugu, is believed to represent ancestral spirits and serve as a bridge between the dead and the living. However, Oriokpa has become notorious in recent times, attacking citizens and inflicting injuries on them with their whips.

The attacks have sparked fear and outrage across the Nsukka Council Area, with residents accusing the Oriokpa masquerades of perpetuating violence.

Earlier this week, hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona took to the streets, protesting against what they described as constant harassment by the masqueraders. These groups were also blamed for an earlier assault on a female nurse in April, which drew significant public condemnation.

The commissioner, while commiserating with the families of the victims, assured that the state government would not tolerate such actions.

“Our people should never be made to live in fear,” Ogbodo stated. “The rights and security of our women, children, and every resident of Enugu State must be guaranteed.”

The violence is part of a broader issue in Southeast Nigeria, where videos of masquerades attacking citizens, especially towards the festive period, have become increasingly common.
