Onyinyechi Mark has made history by securing Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris Paralympics, dominating the powerlifting finals with a remarkable lift of 150kg in the women’s up to 61kg category. The 23-year-old’s incredible performance not only earned her the top spot but also set a new world record for the event.

Mark’s triumph came after a fierce competition, where she outperformed China’s Cui Jianjin, who took home the silver with a lift of 140kg. Mexico’s Amelia Perez rounded out the podium with a bronze medal, falling 10kg short of the silver medalist despite her spirited attempts.

Mark’s record-setting lift took place at La Chapelle Arena, and her victory marked Team Nigeria’s third medal at the Paris Paralympics. Earlier in the week, Nigeria had already made its mark with Esther Nworgu winning silver in the women’s up to 41kg para-powerlifting event on Wednesday, and Eniola Bolaji claiming bronze in the women’s singles SL3 badminton event two days prior.

Nigeria’s Paralympic team has a rich tradition of excellence, particularly in powerlifting and athletics. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, the team secured ten medals, including four golds, showcasing their prowess on the international stage.
