Why Tinubu should Complete Eight Years in Office – Okowa

former Delta State governor and ex-vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ifeanyi Okowa, has publicly thrown his support behind President Bola Tinubu completing a full eight-year term in office, citing national stability as the primary reason.

Speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, Okowa, who recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), argued that continuity in leadership would help maintain political equilibrium in Nigeria.

“For the stability of this nation, I also do believe that, yes, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected president in 2023, and for the stability of Nigeria, we should have him complete his eight-year tenure,” Okowa stated. “Then the presidency can move back to the north.”

While careful not to label his comments as promoting a north-south rotation, Okowa acknowledged the enduring significance of regional balance in leadership, even as he claimed the political landscape has evolved beyond rigid zoning.

“Politics today may not be about the north-south divide,” he added. “People from both regions are competing within all political parties.”

Okowa’s endorsement of Tinubu comes on the heels of a dramatic political shift in Delta State, where he and his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside other PDP heavyweights, formally joined the APC on April 23. According to Okowa, the move was nearly unanimous among key stakeholders.

“When we went into the meeting, we considered several options, including a coalition,” he revealed. “But it was a near-unanimous decision that we should move into the APC.”

The defection has already reshaped the political power map in the Delta. Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, announced on Sunday that the APC structure in the state is now “fully under the governor’s control.”
