Ogun teacher lands in hot waters after student dies from ‘extreme’ punishment

In what was supposed to be a form of correction, an Ogun State teacher teaching in Obafemi Grammar School has landed himself in hot waters after a student passed on while serving punishment.

The school located in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State was thrown into confusion following the incident.

Reports gathered indicate that the teacher brought in a trash can and instructed everyone to avoid breaking it, the deceased simply known as Ariyo jokingly replied the teacher saying the trash can was bought with their money.

The teacher, name withheld got offended by the student’s remark took the issue to the principal who in turn asked the teacher to punish Ariyo.

The incident was made public after an activist, Justadetoun posted it online.

Justadetoun narrated that Ariyo was flogged 164 strokes of the cane and collapsed in the process.

Seeing the dire situation, he was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba, were he placed on drip and writhing in pain before he gave up.

Ogun Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola while confirming the report on Friday slightly contradicted the report on the number of strokes the deceased received.

According to Odutola, the decreased was flogged 24 strokes of the cane and was made to do 162 frog jumps which led to his collapse.

“The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday]”, she stated.

The state PRO, further noted that corpse has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy and that examination will be conducted soon.
