Alabi Quadri, the teenager who gained nationwide attention during Nigeria’s 2023 presidential campaign for standing in front of Peter Obi’s convoy, has been released from Kirikiri Prison and reunited with his family, three months after being wrongfully detained.

According to a detailed statement from his lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, Quadri’s ordeal began in January when he was abducted by two notorious area boys—Lege and Baba Waris—near his family home in Amukoko, Lagos. The 17-year-old was taken to the Amukoko Divisional Police Headquarters, where officers falsely accused him of involvement in a street fight. Shockingly, he was later charged with armed robbery and remanded at the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre alongside four unknown adults.

On Thursday, April 17, Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi ordered Quadri’s release after the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) issued a legal advice stating there was no evidence linking him to the alleged armed robbery.

Shortly after the court ruling, Effiong confirmed the boy had been reunited with his family. “Quadri Alabi was handed over to me by the Nigerian Correctional Service at the Apapa Magistrate Court moments ago after his release warrant was signed. He has united with his family,” he said.

Effiong also disclosed plans to relocate the family and support Quadri’s rehabilitation, adding, “I will post his account details soon.”

The legal team is demanding ₦100 million in compensation and a public apology from the police, along with disciplinary action against the officers involved.
