NYSC member feared dead in Bayelsa boat mishap

An unfortunate boat mishap is feared to have claimed the life of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Bayelsa State.

The corps member who was serving at Okpotuwari Community, according to a NAN report, boarded the ill-fated boat with two of his friends on their way back from Ondewari on Friday.

They reportedly encountered rough currents at the jetty before their hand-paddled canoe capsized. Despite sympathisers immediately rushing to the scene to oversee a rescue search, it proved a little too late as only two of the victims were rescued alive.

“The rescue team searched for the remains of the drowned corps member to no avail, and local divers later joined them but they are yet to find the body. Hopefully it will be afloat by Saturday,” Mr Tontiemote Yeiyei, a resident of the community explained, adding that other “survivors have been stabilised and are being taken care of at a clinic.”

Marine police sources in Southern Ijaw couldn’t confirm the incident as they said the incident was yet to be reported.
