Notorious Drug Baron Arrested After 17 Years on the Run

After 17 years on the run, one of the world’s most wanted drug barons, Ogbonnaya Kevin Jeff, has finally been apprehended by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The 59-year-old was arrested at his hideout in Ojo, Lagos, in what authorities are calling a breakthrough in the fight against international drug trafficking.

Speaking at a press conference at NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, the agency’s chairman, Buba Marwa, detailed the elaborate manhunt that led to Jeff’s capture. He revealed that the suspect had been under surveillance following an Interpol Red Notice and intelligence from South Korea’s National Intelligence Service.

“The major development that warranted this special briefing pertains to the arrest of a drug lord who is wanted across the world as the leader of an international drug trafficking organization,” Marwa stated. “This is a significant breakthrough in our efforts to dismantle drug syndicates operating within and beyond our borders.”

Jeff, described as the mastermind behind a vast drug trafficking network, has been under NDLEA investigation for years. His operations involved smuggling illicit substances into South Korea using young Nigerian couriers. Authorities believe he laundered drug proceeds through electronics imports and other businesses.

During a search of his residence at No. 3, Ibukunoluwa Taiwo Close, off LASU Road in Lagos, NDLEA operatives recovered multiple Nigerian international passports with Korean visas, suggesting a widespread trafficking operation. A stash of illicit drugs was also discovered in a hidden storehouse at the back of his property.

Marwa emphasized that Jeff was not just another domestic drug dealer but a major international trafficker. His criminal record dates back to 2007 when he served a prison sentence in South Korea before being deported in 2008. However, he quickly resumed his illicit trade, orchestrating operations from Nigeria and beyond.

“Presently, he is wanted in the Republic of Korea for multiple drug trafficking offences,” Marwa said. “An Interpol Red Notice was issued for his arrest and extradition for crimes committed between 2023 and 2024.”

Investigations revealed that Jeff’s network extended beyond Nigeria, with operations linked to countries such as Cameroon, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Liberia. He was found to be directly responsible for smuggling drugs into South Korea using a sophisticated web of couriers and associates.

Authorities detailed several smuggling attempts masterminded by Jeff, including an incident on October 5, 2023, where he shipped over 6,000 grams of skunk hidden in dried chilies and jujube from Burkina Faso to a contact in South Korea. The illicit package arrived at Incheon Airport on October 19, 2023.

Further investigations showed that between December 2023 and April 2024, Jeff instructed couriers Santa Elizabeth Pieterse and Carl Yohan Stephan Brisman to smuggle five kilograms of methamphetamine into South Korea. The drugs had a staggering street value of over N1.4 billion.

He also maintained a domestic courier known as ‘Asa,’ who transported drug consignments to a warehouse operated by Okori Emmanuel, a Nigerian managing his supply chain in South Korea. Two separate arrest warrants were issued against Jeff by the Seoul Central District Court in January and June 2024, charging him with narcotics importation under South Korea’s stringent drug laws, which carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Marwa reaffirmed NDLEA’s commitment to ensuring Nigeria does not serve as a hub for international drug traffickers.

“We will continue our relentless fight against illicit drug networks and their financiers,” he stated. “The arrest of Ogbonnaya Kevin Jeff is a testament to our resolve to work with international partners to ensure no drug baron finds Nigeria a haven.”
