Chief Justice of Nigeria did not order Nnamdi Kanu’s release -NJC
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed reports claiming that Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, ordered the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement issued on Thursday, Kemi Ogedengbe, NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, described the reports as “false” and “a figment of the imagination of the writer.”
“The attention of the National Judicial Council (NJC) has been drawn to media reports suggesting that the Honorable Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the Council, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, ordered the release of Nnamdi Kanu and his repatriation to Kenya,” the statement read.
“The Council wishes to state categorically that there are no court proceedings, decisions, or judgments in which such a pronouncement was made by the CJN.”
Ogedengbe further emphasized that Justice Kekere-Ekun had never presided over any of Kanu’s cases at the Supreme Court, nor had she written any formal letter to the Kenyan government or its High Commission regarding his arrest and trial.
“The Council urges members of the public to disregard this fake news,” the statement concluded.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria in 2021. He is facing charges related to a treasonable felony.
His case recently took a new turn after Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court recused herself, leading to the reassignment of the case to Justice James Omotosho.
