NIS nabs 75 illegal immigrants in Enugu

A total of 75 illegal immigrants, mostly from Niger Republic and Cameroon, have been arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Enugu State.

The NIS Comptroller in the state, Dora Amahian, said on Monday that the immigrants were arrested after the operatives of the command carried out a raid on Friday.

Amahian said there had been complaints by members of the public on the immigrants’ alleged nefarious activities.

They were repatriated to their respective countries at the weekend.

“Most of them came to Enugu State because they saw it as a safe haven for them. Some of them were said to have involved themselves in violent crime before they were arrested,” she said.

She stated that the immigration command was on the trail of other illegal immigrants who were still residing in the state.

Amahian noted that although Nigeria would not chase away foreigners from fellow ECOWAS nations, such immigrants must obtain the necessary document to be able to reside in the country.
