Favor Igiebor: It was a skit,” husband reveals
The husband of Favor Igiebor, the woman captured on video tearing her husband’s Nigerian passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, has revealed that the entire incident was a staged skit.
“Dear Nigerians, what my wife tore at the airport is not my international passport. It was all a skit. We never expected this story to blow up like this,” Mr. Igiebor said in a new video.
His apology and request for forgiveness from Nigerians come five days after the viral MMIA video triggered an investigation by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), leading to Mrs. Igiebor being summoned for questioning.
Who Are the Igiebors?
Neusroom investigations on August 13 raised doubts about the authenticity of the incident, suggesting it might be staged.
Our research shows that the couple, based in Italy, are content creators who manage social media pages featuring their family life. Their videos, primarily on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, typically garner few likes and comments. A video posted a day before the MMIA incident, showing Mr. Igiebor gifting his wife an iPhone 12 Pro Max, had only 68 comments and 64 likes as of August 13 (4:43 am).
However, their social media following has surged since the passport desecration incident, indicating a potential publicity stunt.
“For Nigeria’s immigration, we say sorry. We cannot defile the law of Nigeria by destroying a Nigerian passport,” Mr. Igiebor added.
His confession has sparked strong reactions from Nigerians, with many calling for consequences for deceiving the public and wasting government resources.
An X user suggested that the couple should be held accountable for the government’s expenses incurred during the investigation. Others expressed concern about the involvement of children in such deceptive stunts.
