NIHOTOUR’s Aare Fagade Presents Nigeria’s Digital Tourism Blueprint at Europe-Africa Summit

As part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s tourism, hospitality, and travel sector, the Director-General of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), Aare (Dr.) Abisoye Fagade represented Nigeria as a key speaker at the Europe-Africa Investment Summit held in Athens, Greece.

Themed “Data-Driven Destination Management,” the high-level panel explored how digital transformation and smart infrastructure can revolutionise tourism across both continents.

Aare Fagade seized the opportunity to spotlight Nigeria’s evolving strategy, rooted in sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation, as a model for Africa’s broader tourism renaissance.

His message echoed key pillars of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly job creation, youth empowerment, and economic diversification. “Technology—massive data, AI, and digital infrastructure—can help us deliver not just smarter tourism, but better livelihoods and more resilient communities,” Fagade said.

At the summit, Fagade detailed how Nigeria is tapping into digital tools to personalise visitor experiences, optimise mobility and planning, and enhance safety and sustainability. He made a case for using smart regulation to future-proof the industry, positioning NIHOTOUR as both a training institution and a regulatory authority setting quality and innovation benchmarks.

Drawing from case studies back home, he highlighted a new crop of tourism ventures gaining traction for their profitability and purpose. These include:

  • Community-based ecotourism in natural heritage sites like Idanre Hills;
  • Green hospitality models such as Jara Beach Resort;
  • Digital storytelling platforms like Irin Journal that connect travellers to authentic Nigerian experiences;
  • Creative hubs such as Nike Art Gallery driving cultural tourism;
  • And diaspora-focused remote work tourism, designed to attract digital nomads of Nigerian descent.

“These models reflect what the future of Nigerian tourism must be—sustainable, inclusive, and digitally driven,” he said. “NIHOTOUR is not only training the next generation of tourism professionals but also setting national standards for quality, safety, and competitiveness.”

Fagade also introduced a strategic blueprint for public-private-community collaboration, aimed at unlocking the potential of rural and underutilised destinations. His recommendations include SME-focused tourism enterprise zones, joint eco-lodge development, inclusive procurement policies, and community co-ownership frameworks.

His concluding remarks centred on human capital development, laying out eight national policy priorities ranging from curriculum reform and vocational training to gender equity, digital inclusion, and workforce innovation—all core to NIHOTOUR’s transformation agenda.

With Nigeria’s participation in such international forums and its commitment to long-term, tech-forward reforms, the country is not just selling destinations—it’s shaping the future of African tourism.
