Nigerians, NLC, CAN clamour for Leah Sharibu’s release “before it’s too late”

It has been seven months since Leah Sharibu was abducted along with her schoolmates in Dapchi, Yobe State. While her mates have thankfully regained freedom, the 15-year-old remains in captivity because of her Christian faith.

Following the killing of Saifura Khorsa, a midwife working with the ICRC, by the insurgents, there have been increasing concerns over Leah’s safety.

Nigerians have been clamouring for the government to swing into action and ensure the immediate release of the teenage girl.

Organised bodies, the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Labour Congress, have also lent their voices to the public’s demands.

CAN’s president, Rev. Samson Ayokunle said in a statement on Thursday that it is sad that Leah and some of the Chibok girls remain in captivity.

“I call on the Federal Government and the security agencies to put their acts together and release all the captives before it is too late. These people are too young to die. It is the constitutional responsibility of government to protect lives and property of the governed,” Ayokunle said.

The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba also described Saifura’s killing as barbaric and called for the arrest of those behind the evil acts.

“Our security forces should also ensure that abducted workers are released to their families unharmed,” Wabba said.
