Nigerian schoolgirls win Tech competition in the U.S

A group of Nigerian secondary school girls, on Thursday, won the 2018 Technovation World Pitch in San Francisco, California.

The team, Save-A-Soul developed a mobile application, ‘FD Detector’ which could be used to tackle the problem of fake pharmaceutical products in the country.

They defeated teams from the USA, Spain, Turkey, Uzbekistan and China to win the 2018 Technovation world pitch junior division.

The girls – Adaeze Onu Igbo, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Promise Nnalue, and Vivian Okoye – were selected from 2,000 mobile app developers to represent Africa at the world pitch.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo extended a congratulatory message to the girls on Friday.

“These young ladies in Junior Secondary School, developed a mobile application called ‘FD Detector’ to tackle the problems of fake pharmaceutical products in Nigeria. Congratulations! We are very proud of you,” he said.

The teenage girls, from Anambra State, were mentored byUchenna Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu, the founder of Edufun Technik STEM Center.

They plan to partner with NAFDAC to put the app to good use.
