Lt. Col. Anele Makes History as Nigerian Army’s First Female Director of Public Relations
The Nigerian Army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Onyinyechi Anele as the acting director of army public relations. With this milestone, Anele becomes the first woman ever to hold this prestigious position.
Markus Kangye, the director of defence media operations, confirmed the appointment to TheCable, highlighting the significance of this achievement within the military. Anele will officially take over from Major General Onyema Nwachukwu on April 22.
Before her new appointment, Anele held an important role within the department of civil-military relations and previously served as the public relations officer in the office of the Chief of army staff. A member of Direct Regular Course 15 and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Anele’s career has been marked by her commitment to bridging communication between the military and the public.
Her predecessor, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, held the role for over three years, having been appointed in June 2021 after a significant reshuffling in the military. As the army spokesperson, Nwachukwu worked to strengthen the military’s communication efforts during a period of strategic transformation.
