Nigeria Governors’ Forum backs tax reform bills, calls for impartial VAT sharing formula
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed its support for the proposed tax reform bills currently under consideration at the National Assembly.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the forum emphasized the need for an “equitable” formula for sharing value-added tax (VAT) revenues across the country.
The position was a key outcome of a meeting held on January 16, 2025, between the NGF and the Presidential Tax Reform Committee.
The meeting focused on critical issues related to Nigeria’s fiscal policies and tax system, with the aim of addressing longstanding inefficiencies and promoting fiscal sustainability. The NGF’s endorsement signals a unified stance among state governors on the need for comprehensive tax reform to drive national development.
The proposed tax reforms, which include adjustments to VAT distribution and broader fiscal policy changes, are expected to improve revenue generation and allocation, ensuring a fairer distribution of resources across states.
The NGF pledged continued collaboration with the federal government and relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the tax reform agenda.
